Interesting Facts
-
The Mexican Ban: Elvis was actually "persona non grata" in Mexico when this was filmed. Following a manufactured rumor that he had insulted Mexican women in a gossip column, his movies were boycotted and sometimes met with riots. As a result, Elvis never actually went to Acapulco for the filming; all his scenes were shot at Radio Recorders in Hollywood against a green screen and with body doubles in Mexico.
-
Top 10 Hit: Despite the filming drama, the soundtrack was a massive success, peaking at #3 on the Billboard charts. The standout hit was "Bossa Nova Baby," which reached #8 on the Hot 100.
-
The "Bonus" Tracks: The two bonus tracks mentioned on the yellow sticker were actually recorded in Nashville during "lost" sessions that weren't intended for a movie. RCA added them here because the actual movie songs were quite short, and they needed to reach a respectable LP runtime.
-
The Cover Art: The vibrant "Serape" blanket background is iconic among Elvis collectors. Because the green ink on the borders is very prone to "ring wear" (where the outline of the record shows through the cardboard), finding a copy with clean green edges is the "holy grail" for this specific title.
